Raphael Collazo: Catalogue Raisonné

Martin Haggland, 2001-2002

Dedicated to Ernest Acker-Gherardino

"...I was reading about visualizations, and I knew someone, a close friend who passed away, several friends who passed away, and the last one was a cancer patient and I was thinkin' -- I read a lot about the people meditating and visualizing and helping to ah have their illnesses go into remission. So, I was thinking along these lines and I was reading, and I had listened to this tape about meditating and visualizations; and when I listened to this tape it was like everything was up in space, in the air and in the light. And they talked about this beautiful white light, and it's a healing light. And this gave me great inspiration for my paintings; I thought 'Oh, this sounds beautiful' and I wanted to have a place like that so people would look at my painting and say 'Oh this is a beautiful, peaceful place I can sit down and meditate', and feel this wonderful warm light, healing light...." 1

Catalogue Raisonné: Notes

Purpose

This catalogue raisonné is the definitive source of information about Raphael Collazo's work; it provides visual and written documentation on over 800 of the his paintings, works on paper, collages, assemblages and sketches.2 Visual reference consists of a slide of each work. Written documentation consists of each work's catalog number, title, year, medium, size, exhibitions, collection and notes. The notes consist of the author's comments, evidence for the date and the record from an inventory of the artist's paintings. Complementing this catalog, a discussion of the artist's work and life will be found in the author's The Paintings of Raphael Collazo and on the corresponding web site at www.collazo.org. That site also contains an online version of this catalog with illustrations of 295 works.

Source Materials

Details derive from the author's analysis of Collazo's slides and photos, exhibition lists, gallery catalogs, videos of his exhibitions, announcement cards, artistic statements, newspaper articles, gallery transmittals and sales documents. These materials, most produced by the artist or his friend and frequent curator, Ernest Acker-Gherardino, were collected by the latter's sister-in-law, Kay Acker, from Collazo's apartment in New York and from the Southold barn, where he had stored most of his work during the last twenty years of his life.

All of the materials, including the documents referenced in the notes herein, have been donated by Raphael Collazo Foundation to the Colección de las Artes of the Library System of the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico. They have been cataloged by the library system and are now available for study and analysis to anyone interested in researching the visual arts of Puerto Rico.

Additionally, between May 1996 and November 1998, with Kay Acker, the author directed photo documentation of the vast majority of Collazo's known works, including those formerly in the artist's apartment, in the barn, in eight museums and in seven private collections. More than 700 paintings, works on paper, collages, assemblages and sketches were photographed. At most of the photo sessions (except in the museums and in two private collections), the author had the opportunity to examine each work and record its medium, size and any title, date or notation. For further details, please refer to "Source Materials" of The Paintings of Raphael Collazo or the artist's web site at www.collazo.org.

Location of Catalogs

The Catalogue Raisonné has been published in an edition of two.3 No. I is in the library of Raphael Collazo Foundation in New York and No. II is in the Colección de las Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each set is comprised of two volumes. Volume I contains the list of works and slides of the artist's early work (1961-1983); Volume II contains slides of the late work (1984-1989).

Catalog Number

Generally, catalog numbers were assigned in the order that the works were recorded from unorganized slides and photos, then in the order that additional works were photographed: essentially at random. Thus, they have no relationship to chronology, but simply serve to uniquely identify each work. Numbers from 001 to 499 refer to paintings, 500 to 899 to works on paper and 900 to 999 to memorabilia. Not all numbers in these series were assigned and there are some gaps in the sequences.4

Slides are the principal visual reference. Each slide is inscribed with the catalog number of the work depicted and is placed in the same order as the Catalogue Raisonné listing. Occasionally, one or several symbols or letters appear after the catalog number to alert the reader to special considerations; these codes are explained below in the section titled Works by Raphael Collazo,

Catalog numbers should not be confused with the numbers that uniquely identify each photo or with the plate numbers used in The Paintings of Raphael Collazo.

Title

The title shown for a work is based primarily on handwritten inscriptions by the artist or his curator, Acker-Gherardino, on slides and photos, supplemented by contemporary exhibition lists (by either of them) and gallery catalogs. His curator usually invented the titles. They were clever, erudite and enthusiastically accepted by Collazo. One delightful example is A Menacing Variation on an Amusement Park Theme. Some works had many titles: preliminary ones by the artist, titles upon first exhibition (usually by Acker-Gherardino) and later titles (usually also by him, because he had forgotten the original one). Occasionally, there were variant spellings and misspellings.

To rationalize the confusion of multiple titles and to avoid titles that were not used during the artist's lifetime, the author has selected the title and spelling that was used upon the first exhibition of each work. Not only is this approach historically correct, the title is usually the best. For example, the painting that Acker-Gherardino originally titled A Scene From The Life of Giotto, he less aptly retitled Lanai, a decade later. Presumably, he had forgotten the original title, which the author discovered on the gallery's list of works exhibited soon after the painting had been finished. In another instance, a title at different times was spelled Nekofi Cerkafi, Narcofi Sarcafi and Narkofi Sarkafi. The title has been restored to the original spelling, which appears on a contemporary list of May 1985. Variant titles, spellings and misspellings for a particular work are detailed in the author's Comments area of the notes.

A work whose title is unknown or which, perhaps, never had a title is indicated as "Untitled", followed by any relevant information in brackets. If in quotes, that text is inscribed on the work by the artist, as No. 527 Untitled ["I Love Watteau"]. In The Paintings of Raphael Collazo, a working title, identified as "[Estate title]" was used for any untitled piece. For ease in referring to that book, those titles are enclosed in parentheses, as No. 304 Untitled (The Ladies).

Year

Like the title, the year of a work is based primarily on the artist's or his curator's inscriptions on slides and photos, supplemented by lists and catalogs. In some cases, a work can be documented even more precisely: to the season, month or very day of its completion. The evidence used to assign the year or a more exact date is shown in the Date area of the notes. In other cases, even the year can only be guessed at, based on the work's style. To indicate that uncertainty, the letter "c." (circa) precedes the proposed year.

Medium

In most instances, the medium shown is based on the above-mentioned documents. In other cases, the author has examined the work (in person or, less adequately, in a slide or a photo) or has assigned the medium consistent with other works in the series. Fortunately, the artist's frequent use of the catchall phrase "mixed media" to describe his medium from 1984 onward simplified the author's task considerably. "Mixed media" commonly included oil, oil stick, spray paint, chalk, charcoal, graphite pencil, colored pencil, ink, paper collage and fabric collage. The media, at times, were as diverse as model landscaping materials, tarpaper and paint appliqué elements thickened with marble dust, not to mention even more unusual items that the artist utilized from time to time.

Size

Sizes are in inches, vertical by horizontal, for the work itself, without frame or matte, unless otherwise indicated. A third measurement, if any, indicates depth. Dimensions were obtained from a variety of sources: measurements by the author, inscriptions on slides and photos, lists, catalogs and the inventory of the artist's barn, discussed below. When discrepant dimensions were obtained from source materials and confirmatory measurements could not be taken; the most likely size is given, based on the dimensions of other works in the series, the proportions and, as a last resort, the author's memory. When the size is uncertain, the measurement is preceded by "c." (circa).

Exhibitions

The known exhibition history of each work is given using the abbreviations below. All capital letters designate museums; upper and lower case letters, private galleries. Roman numerals indicate the chronological order of exhibitions at the same venue. Arabic numerals indicate the work's clockwise position in the exhibition, starting at the entrance, with the exception of the Galería Santiago exhibition, for which the positions are unknown and such numerals merely indicate the order on the artist's list of works for that show.

After its abbreviation; the title, venue, location, dates and curator of each known exhibition appear, followed by the author's comments. The comments indicate whether a solo or a group show, the works included and any additional information. For convenience, if known and if six or fewer, the works in the exhibition are listed. Otherwise, refer to the Catalogue Raisonné's exhibition history of individual works in the section below titled Works by Raphael Collazo, or, for solo exhibitions of 1984 and later, refer to the virtual exhibitions at www.collazo.org.

Notes

Author's Comments

The author's comments, generally indicating the source of the title and alternative titles of a work, are shown in the Comments area of the notes. In most cases; the title, year, medium and size of each work were obtained from the artist's or his curator's inscriptions on slides and photos. When additional sources were used, usually exhibition lists or gallery catalogs, they are specified.

Evidence for the Date

Details of the season, month or day of the work's completion, if known, appear as the first entry in the Date area of the notes, followed by the source for the year or the more exact date. The author considered the dating of works to be of utmost importance in understanding Collazo's development and rapidly changing styles, never well documented during his lifetime. Then, under the artist's guidance, a far more accurate survey might have been possible. Instead; partial, scattered and, in some cases, incorrect information has been diligently collected, recorded and analyzed in an attempt to present a coherent view of his career. Even so, only about one-quarter of the works can be firmly dated to the year of their completion. These serve as "beacons" to date the other works on the basis of their style. In such cases, the proposed year is preceded by "c." (circa).

Slides and Photos. As previously mentioned, many dates were obtained from inscriptions on slides and photos. However, even the artist's own dates on earlier slides can be off by many years. Accordingly, the author has made a thorough review and assessment of all available documentation in order to assign the most likely date.

Lists and Catalogs. Other important sources of dates were exhibition lists and gallery catalogs. The former are lists of works to be included in an exhibition, usually prepared by the artist or his curator and often handwritten or typed. As preliminary documents for an exhibition, they may not reflect the final decisions about works to be included or their titles; since catalogs do, they are to be preferred. During his study of Collazo's documents, the author found certain lists and, even, catalogs to contain significant errors. Such errors in presumably reliable sources highlight the necessity of reviewing and assessing all of the documentation.

Lab Date. Sometimes when processing the artist's photographic materials, the laboratory stamped a date on the slide mount or the back of the photo. When available, the earliest month and year so stamped is given, preceded by "Lab:". Such a date, if accurately set, determines that the work was completed in that month and year or earlier and, at times, can be useful. The author has found only one stamped date that he deemed questionable. However, this approach is limited: although Collazo was diligent about photographing his later work within a few months of completion; the same cannot be said for work before 1984, precisely that which most lacks any other kind of documentation.

Inventory Record

From about 1969 until the end of his life, in 1990, Collazo stored his work in a barn in Southold, New York. Liza Phillips, Francis Cape and Kay Acker took a partial inventory of that barn in 1996, before the dispersal of the artist's works. Their record, especially useful as a source for the size and medium of works, is transcribed in the Inventory area of the notes.

Works by Raphael Collazo

Works by Raphael Collazo are listed in chronological order, so far as limited knowledge allows, and are grouped into periods of similar style, based on the author's analysis. For an overview of the proposed periods, see Timeline of Painting Periods (1961-1989) at the front of this catalog. Although the paintings are listed before the works on paper of each series, it is likely that they were interspersed with, or even followed them. On the first line for each work is its catalog number, title, year, medium and size (in inches, vertical by horizontal; a third measurement, for some works, indicates depth). On subsequent lines, in smaller type, appear known Exhibitions and Collection; followed by the notes, which include author's Comments, evidence for the Date and the Inventory record. For a visual reference, see the slide in Volume I (1961-1983) or Volume II (1984-1989) that bears the corresponding catalog number. The slides are in the same order as this listing.

For catalog numbers followed by "*", refer to the supplementary photo, negative or 4 x 5 inch transparency for the highest image quality (available only in Catalogue Raissoné No. 1 at Raphael Collazo Foundation). "(ES)" indicates an early state of the work; "(MS)" a middle state; "(SV)" the only visual is on the Swaneria video; "(T)" see the 4 x 5 inch transparency (only in Catalogue Raisonné No. 1); "(X)" there is no visual reference in this catalog: consult the CDLA archives if so noted; "(L)", "(C)" and "(R)" indicate left, center and right respectively of triptychs; and Roman numerals "(I)" through "(V)" components of a single work. Catalog numbers followed by a "+" indicate works added to those in the index of mature paintings (1984-1989) of The Paintings of Raphael Collazo. These are fragments of freeform constructions, works that lack complete visual reference, or additional early states.
